Mardi Gras in a Polish way

Last Tuesday was my special Valentine’s Day… I had a Fat Tuesday with some Vodka cocktails and doughtnuts. Samarkand – in Fitzrovia – was hosting a Vodka Masterclass with William Borrell from Vestal Vodka.Capture d_écran 2017-03-06 à 22.25.56

Also known as Shrove Day or Mardi Gras Day, Fat Tuesday is a traditional day of indulgence ahead of Lent. The concept is very simple : Vodka drinks and doughtnuts.

William Borrell introduced us to the Vodka and history of Vestal Vodka. We sampled Pomorze Unfiltered Potato Vodka, Vestal Blended Potato Vodka, Kaszebe Unfiltered Potato Vodka and Vestal Aged Vodka.

Samarkand has also designed a dedicated Vestal Vodkamenu for the occasion for only £6.50 per cocktail. My friend and I are so greedy that we’ve tasted all these cocktails, and my favourite one is definitely the ‘Open Sesame’ – a sweet and fruity cocktail!

For that little something extra on Fat Tuesday, Samarkand’s kitchen has treated guests to servings of the on-trend ‘Pączki* and Manti, the traditional Uzbek Dumplings.

foodies are queuing around the block from bakeries in the States for a pączki. Pączki are pastries traditional to Polish cuisine. They are similar to doughnuts.

Samarkand will be hosting different masterclasses every week. They will be a limited to 30 people per class and they will book out quick! Don’t miss the next one!
